Enjoy Your Vacation

27 12 2011

I will be putting in grades off and on.  Many of the papers are out of order, so don’t assume you didn’t get credit for an assignment; any out of order assignments get into the gradebook at the end.  Do not email me as I will not be available and I like to keep a clear separation between vacation time and school time, as I am sure you do as well.

Above all…enjoy your vacation.

Tomorrow’s “Make-Up” Essay

7 12 2011

If you plan to take the essay tomorrow you will need to email me by nine tonight.  There is a limit to the amount of people who can take it and I suggest you really consider whether it’s the right thing for you.  You must email me here:  ofaplanguage@gmail.com.  You will need to be in C-14 no later than 7:50.

The essay you will be writing is analytical and will replace an analytical essay;it’s not extra credit.  If you already have an A or A- it’s not so appropriate for you as you have already demonstrated your abilities either consistently, or with marked improvement.  If your grades seem to be consistent over time, it’s also unlikely that it would affect you much, for example, if you consistently score 6′s and 7′s .  If you consistently score 4′s and 5′s it might be helpful provided you feel like you know what you need to do differently and are able to make a conscious effort on a given essay.  If your scores have improved over time, but those first few essays were very weak — 4′s or low 5′s — you will likely benefit as you are acquiring the appropriate skills to write effectively.

Just one more thing.  If you have a low grade because of a lousy work ethic, writing a strong essay will not help you too much, doing homework will.

Paragraph Revision

In class we will be revising an analytical paragraph focusing on effective topic sentences and appropriate, descriptive analysis.
